Probability and uncertainty
Probability describes the likelihood of an outcome under a specified model. It is not a promise about the next result. A previous outcome does not, by itself, establish that a future outcome is due.
Keep the distinction clear: a mathematical average, a description of a game, and a personal outcome are different things.
Return to Player (RTP)
RTP is a theoretical long-run average stated as a percentage. It is calculated under particular assumptions and over a very large number of outcomes. Actual results over a short period can differ substantially.
An RTP figure does not mean that an individual will receive that percentage back, and it does not remove the possibility of losing money.
Volatility
Volatility describes how widely outcomes can vary. It is often presented with labels such as low, medium, or high. These labels are descriptions rather than guarantees, and they may not be directly comparable across providers.
A lower-volatility label does not mean an activity is risk-free. A higher-volatility label does not mean a large outcome will occur.
Reading the conditions
Headlines can leave out important restrictions. The following terms are useful to recognise when reading promotional or account conditions.
| Term | What it describes | What it does not establish |
|---|---|---|
| Eligibility | Who an offer or service is available to under its stated terms. | Whether the activity is lawful in a particular location. |
| Expiry | When an offer or condition ceases to apply. | That acting before the deadline is beneficial. |
| Wagering requirement | A condition that links an offer to a stated amount of wagering. | A guarantee that money can be withdrawn. |
| Withdrawal restriction | Limits or conditions stated for access to an account balance. | That a provider will resolve a dispute in your favour. |
Recognising unsupported claims
Be cautious with claims of guaranteed profit, guaranteed returns, or a result being “due.” A confident headline is not evidence. Look for sources, dates, and clear explanations of uncertainty.
Being able to access a website, seeing an app-store listing, or reading an overseas licence claim does not establish local legal permission. Check current official sources and seek qualified advice when needed.
Quick questions
Does understanding these terms remove financial risk?
